Chicken Momo is the Nepali version of dumpling. It is a traditional delicacy in Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, Sikkim, and Ladakh. It is one the most popular fast foods in these regions and is also common in places with noticeable Nepalese Diaspora, such as Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, and West Bengal (particularly in Darjeeling ). Over the last decade Chicken Momo has become a very popular street food in many Nepalese cities.

The Wrappers for Chicken Momo: The dough for the wrapper is made with wheat flour and sometimes a little yeast or baking soda is added. It is then flattened into small circular wrappers.

The filling for Chicken Momo: Ground chicken and other vegetables including onions, garlic, ginger and cilantro are minced and mixed together with other spices. In northern part of Nepal, Yak meat is used while buffalo meat is the more popular in the central part of the country. Lamb and goat meat are also preferred by some.

The filling is enclosed in the wrapper. Although round pocket, half moon and crescent shapes are popular the most popular shapes of Momo can be found in different shapes and sizes. The dumplings are then steamed and served with a soup (either a stock based on bones or tomato-based) , as well as chili sauce. The dumplings may also be shallow-fried or deep-fried after being steamed.

The best way to eat Chicken Momo is to dip it in the sauce without puncturing any hole in it, then putting the whole thing in the mouth to let the juice explode inside the mouth before you start chewing into the heavenly spices.

Caution: The juice inside Chicken Momo is hotter than the wrapper outside and can burn.
