Meet Chatpate: Nepal's Favorite Street Snack Just Landed on Our Menu

If you’ve never had chatpate, here’s the short version: it’s Nepal’s answer to bhel puri, but sharper, spicier, and a little more electric. And starting this month, it’s on the menu at our Niles location.

What exactly is chatpate?

Chatpate is a no-cook street food built for the moment it’s served — puffed rice tossed with a spicy, tangy masala and a mix of add-ins that vary from vendor to vendor. Boiled potato, chickpeas, roasted peanuts, chopped onion and tomato, and green chili are common, though the exact combination shifts from place to place — some skip the potato, some leave out the tomato. Come check us out to find out how we do it. What stays constant is the masala itself and a hit of vegetable oil. Fresh lemon juice goes in last, right before it hits your table, because puffed rice only stays crunchy for a few minutes once the citrus and oil touch it. That’s the whole point — it’s meant to be eaten immediately, still crackling.

What makes it unmistakably Nepali — rather than just “Nepal’s version of an Indian chaat or bhel” — is the specific balance of spice, sour, and chili in the masala itself. That combination of spicy, sour, and crunchy is what chatpate fans crave.

Where it comes from

Across Nepal, chatpate isn’t a restaurant dish first — it’s a street cart dish, from Kathmandu’s sidewalks to towns throughout the country. Vendors mix it to order on small paper plates for schoolkids heading home and evening crowds looking for something to snack on between meals. It’s fast, cheap, and made to be shared standing up on a sidewalk. We wanted to bring that same energy — casual, social, a little messy, entirely addictive — to our dining room instead of keeping it plated and formal.

Why we’re adding it now

Chatpate is naturally vegetarian and vegan (no meat, no dairy), which makes it an easy addition to the table for mixed groups where not everyone orders the same way.

It’s also just a great starter. Order it while you’re deciding on curries, or split it as a table snack before momo — the crunch and acidity reset your palate between richer dishes.

Where to get it

Chatpate is available now at our Niles location — 8265 W. Golf Road — a la carte.

Order it fresh, eat it fast, and don’t let it sit — that’s not us being precious about the recipe, that’s just chatpate. Ask your server for it by name, or add it when you order online.
